Pebble Island is one of the larger islands in the northern part of the Falkland Islands, known for its open landscapes, long beaches, rocky shores, and low hills. The island stretches across a varied terrain of grassland, peat, freshwater ponds, and coastal cliffs, with several bays providing sheltered areas for wildlife. A small settlement serves as the island’s main community, while much of the surrounding land remains open and lightly developed. Pebble Island is particularly noted for its combination of farming, wildlife, and links to the Falklands’ military history.

The island has a strong connection to traditional Falkland Islands life, with sheep farming remaining an important part of its identity. Its history also includes a significant military chapter, as Pebble Island was the site of an Argentine airfield and an important conflict during the Falklands War. Remnants of that period can still be found across the island, including aircraft wreckage and other military features. These historical elements exist alongside working farmland, giving Pebble Island a distinctive connection between rural life and the events that shaped the Falkland Islands.

Wildlife is one of Pebble Island’s main attractions. The island supports colonies of gentoo and rockhopper penguins, while Magellanic penguins can also be found along parts of the coast. Black-browed albatrosses and other seabirds nest around the cliffs and rocky shorelines, and dolphins, seals, and whales may be encountered in surrounding waters. Elephant Bay, Elephant Point, and other coastal areas offer opportunities to observe wildlife, while inland ponds and grasslands provide habitat for a variety of Falkland birds.

Pebble Island also has several distinctive natural features, including beaches formed from smooth rounded stones, which are responsible for the island’s name. Visitors can explore the landscape by vehicle and on foot, with local guides providing access to wildlife areas and sites associated with the Falklands War. The island’s remote setting means that facilities are limited, but its working farm, historic remains, broad beaches, and wildlife colonies provide a varied experience. Pebble Island offers a clear view of the Falkland Islands as both a living rural community and an important habitat for southern wildlife.
